Christian Science Reading Rooms seem to arouse a lot of curiosity. People wonder:
What is a Christian Science Reading Room?
What is its purpose?
Reading Rooms, like the one in Chagrin Falls, are found in communities around the world. They have been serving the public for over 100 years! Some are located in shopping areas; others in major airports or commercial office buildings; while still others are nestled alongside a Christian Science church building.
You can purchase books, magazines, study aids, and other materials at the Reading Room.
The Reading Room has two purposes. The first is to serve as a source for Christian Science books and publications. Among the wide selection of books available for sale are the Bible, and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures and other writings by Mary Baker Eddy. The Reading Room also has Bible study aids, including translations, concordances, word studies, and commentaries.
We stock many products that support your study of the Bible and Christian Science.
The Reading Room also sells The Christian Science Journal, a monthly magazine; the Christian Science Sentinel, which comes out weekly; and the Pulitzer Prize-winning Christian Science Monitor, available as a weekly news magazine in the Reading Room, and as a curated daily news email. There is a quiet study room located in the Reading Room.
It is open to the public for study and prayer.
The second purpose of the Reading Room is to provide a comfortable place for people to quietly read, study, and pray. Many people use the Reading Room to study the Weekly Bible Lesson, to listen to podcasts and watch lectures on Christian Science, or to listen to hymns and inspirational music. It's easy to search resources such as the Bible and the Christian Science textbook, as well as the archives of the Journal, Sentinel, and Herald, dating back to the late 1880s, via Concord and JSH-Online. We have a computer available to access these online offerings — in addition to having hardback concordances and bound volumes of the whole archive!
When you visit us to find out more, we'll be happy to show you around, answer your questions, and help you find the resources you need. Scroll down just a bit for our location, hours, and phone number.
